Drug addiction is not only a physical illness, it also involves a mental dependence to the drug. The body has adjusted its chemical makeup to account for, and to expect, the regular intervals of the substance it has become addicted to. Without the substance, the body begins to show very unpleasant symptoms of withdrawal.

That’s where supervised detox becomes important. As your body purges itself of the remains of your substance of choice, you are likely to experience withdrawal symptoms. These may be relatively mild, and simply cause discomfort for you, or they may be more serious. In some instances, withdrawal symptoms can even prove to be dangerous. When detoxing on your own, you may be tempted to return to your substance of choice in order to mitigate the symptoms of withdrawal.

However, with the supervised detoxification we provide at the Madison Institute in Richmond, Virginia, our counseling staff is available around the clock to help you cope with addiction recovery. This will help to reassure you that all of your needs will be taken care of, and that you will not be tempted to return to the addictive behavior once it is broken. In addition, your safety will be always be assured with supervised detox.

Once you’ve completed the detox process, it will be time to proceed to therapy. During your time at our substance abuse treatment facility, you’ll take part in several varieties of therapy. These will include individual therapy sessions, in which you meet with one of our addiction counselors one-on-one in order to discuss your most intimate thoughts regarding your addiction. These sessions will prove invaluable in identifying aspects of yourself you’ll want to concentrate on during your tenure with the Madison Institute.

For applicable clients, the Madison Institute offers dual diagnosis mental health treatment. Roughly half of our clients are not only struggling with an addiction, they’re also dealing with a co-occurring mental health disorder. By utilizing dual diagnosis mental health treatment, we are able to give these clients the best possible shot at recovery by treating both the co-occurring mental health disorder and the addiction concurrently. In instances where clients who are dealing with a co-occurring mental health disorder attend a drug rehab facility that does not provide dual diagnosis treatment, those clients may have their addiction dealt with only to return to substance abuse after graduating from the program.
